ABOUT THE COURSE

The course overviews the broad spectra of supervisory responsibilities. The focus is on a wide variety of supervisor safety issues.

The following outline depicts much of the materials focus.

I. Introduction to Loss Control

This section teaches the attendee what loss control truly is, its value to the industry and how this methodology reduces costs.

II. Responsibilities Under the Law

This section covers a major part of the supervisor’s responsibilities under the law. It focuses on MSHA and/or OSHA as well as employee relations aspects of the law. This section also covers aspects of negligence.


III. Safety Inspections/Audits

This section teaches the supervisor how to handle MSHA/OSHA inspections - from the regular inspection to the special inspection and investigation.
It also teaches the attendee the value of internal inspections and how to interact with the safety professional. How to conduct task observation in a manner to identify the potential for loss, is also covered in this section.

IV. Risk Analysis

This section identifies the need for risk analysis and teaches the attendee how to conduct the analysis. This section also assists the attendee with learning prioritization of risk.

V. Incident Investigation

This section teaches the supervisor his/her role in incident investigation.

In this section attendees will learn investigation procedures. They will also be instructed in ways to work with the agencies while at the same time protecting company interests. Although, this class only touches lightly on root cause analysis, it does teach the value of incident analysis.

VI. The Supervisor’s Role in an Emergency

This section explains how to manage defined emergencies, and how to work with others during emergencies.

VII. Communication

This section instructs the attendee how to communicate with employees, management levels, and others including MSHA/OSHA and the State.

VIII. Professional Ethics and Leadership

This section teaches the value of ethics and leadership and what company's expectations are of their supervisors.

IX. Dedication

This section is designed to teach the supervisor dedication to his job, loyalty to the company, and how to manage safety while not sacrificing productivity.

X.Supervisor Record Keeping

This section teaches the supervisor how to take notes, and how to word notes and records in a manner to reduce their and the companies liability.

X. Supervisor Employee Contacts

This section instructs the supervisor in the value of planned personal contacts and the value of establishing personal relationships with each employee.

XI. Personal Protection Equipment

This section will explain the supervisor’s role in assuring proper use of PPE.
